Book review : The DNA of Formosa

'The DNA of the Island' is directly translated from 〈島嶼 DNA〉 written by Professor Chen 陳耀昌, who wanted to prove the variety of Taiwanese via diseases and DNA in Taiwanese people.

I bought the book on Saturday and already read half of it.
The most attractive part was his study revealing the secret in the Taiwanese's DNA.
Being an expert and doctor in Marrow Research, he has had an opportunity to find out the family tree of the Taiwanese's DNA.
He discovered there were three major types of races composed of the variety of Taiwanese's DNA, including European Caucasian, Mongolian Han, and Austronesian (Taiwan aboriginal).

For the European Caucasian DNA, the evidence of HLA-B2704 and HLA-B2705 have been discovered in a percent of Taiwanese population, which may cause Ankylosing Spondylitis, and HLA-B2705 only exists in the offspring of White people in West Europe or Scandinavia. That is, we could trace back those Ankylosing Spondylitis patients' family tree by testing their HLA to know their ancestors' origin.

This  finding  also has historic evidences to support. Back to the 1600s, Taiwan was discovered and ruled by the Dutch East India Company for around 35 year. It was possible that Dutch sailors, soldiers, or  businessmen married female aboriginals at that time, hence their offspring  inherit HLA-B2705.

Anyway, it has been a wonderful reading, and to find out what have composed Taiwanese.
